Britta's apprenticeship in growing vegetables

May 2021 - August 2023

Preparing the soil, planting and seeding, cultivating, harvesting, processing, distributing, putting down crops.... quite close to the next city in the middle of a forest glade I am learning different methods how to grow and commercialize organic vegetables. It feels like an island in the middle of the heavily populated Switzerland. More than 30 varieties of vegetables are growing on an area of about 5 ha surrounded by more or less extensive managed grasslands. Each day brings its own challenges and surprises. The work is quite diverse, mistakes are there to learn and the environment allows me to work relatively independent. It is a place where production serves people and not the other way around. Tractors and machines have a few years on their belt and require mechanical adjustments adapted to the diverse soil condtions. Also people working and living on the farm are quite diverse with interesting life histories. I am really greatful for the opportunity to learn here, not only in terms of vegetable production, but also in human terms. I am looking forward to two exciting years!
